When just starting out, beginners in kayaking will need to learn all about the best kayaking equipment available. You may want to start by taking a kayaking class. Classes not only offer you the expertise of a long time kayaker, but they can teach you all about the different styles of kayaks and which is right for you. Choose from a rigid kayak, often made of plastic or fiberglass, a folding kayak made of fabric that is tightened over a frame, or an inflatable kayak. Inflatable kayaks are often the beginners’ choice. Easy to carry and maneuver, these kayaks are also family friendly.
Beginning kayakers should look for a kayaks’ stability. Stable kayaks are found to be wider and slower, ensuring the safety of a new kayaker. A larger cockpit will make a beginner feel more comfortable. Necessary equipment for a beginner will be a life jacket, a helmet and paddles. Learning the proper way to paddle will help you learn to better control your kayak. Your sitting position will also make a difference in the control you have over your kayak. If you are taking a kayaking for beginner’s course, your instructor should offer several styles of kayaks to try. This will be the best way to learn which boat may be best for you and your needs before purchasing your own. When selecting a kayaking course, ask for training in forward and reverse paddle strokes, an Eskimo roll, and other self rescue tips. Whitewater kayaking and sea kayaking are quite different.
